I met Lynn Parkerson, artistic director of Brooklyn Ballet, in Dick Andros’s class at Ballet Academy East. Mr. Andros was a ballet legend none who knew him could forget. His combinations were tricky . He was exacting, critical, temperamental and utterly lovable.

Shirley Basset, another BAE instructor had suggested Lynn and I would enjoy meeting because of our mutual interest in the Baroque. We began collaborating about 10 years ago.

My interest is and has been very French. Lynn’s is much broader and I loved the way she mixes it all up. She founded BB in 2002 to bring ballet to the streets and the streets to ballet.“The Rosary Sonatas” gave me the opportunity to interpret 17th c for a younger audience whose attention would not be held by a textbook recreation. And von Biber’s music is mystical.

Baroque to Hip-Hop allowed me to juxtapose the pared down modern with the elaborate dress of the 17th/18th centuries. Then followed some wonderfully free leotard ballets, sylphs, angels and streetwear.

I always have a wonderful time working with Lynn.
